I noted on the footage about last week's meteorite there seem to be lot of people driving along with their cameras rolling. The fact that so many people were able to supply footage is amazing, if a little suspicious. Guardian has a fun piece today on the subject, but doesn't address the meteorite. or the dashcam phenomenon which is far more interesting. Are Russians doing this to generate great footage for Yandex or to keep a record for insurance purposes.

I was wondering about those cams too. NRC has a piece on it:

Dashcams are on the rise in Western countries too.
They're quite useful of course in case of an accident, not only when meteors strike!
I did a couple of reviews here: http://www.squidoo.com/dashcam-faq-all-about-dashboard-cameras
