Despite increased access to the internet, radio remains the most widely used media source, especially for remote Pacific Islands.The decision to axe the ABC's $220 million, 10-year contract with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) to run the Asia Pacific television service, Australia Network, was widely tipped, despite the ABC being in the first year of the contract. Australia Network broadcasts to 46 Asia Pacific countries including the Solomon Islands, India and Papua New Guinea.
